Google today
shared details of its upcoming "Honeycomb"
Android 3.0 software. Mobile device makers are
expected to use the next version of Android in
products that will compete with Apple's iPad
tablet computer. Android 3.0 is "specifically designed to give
developers the tools and capabilities they need to
create great applications for tablets and similar
devices, together with the flexibility to adapt
existing apps," Google's Android SDK tech lead
Xavier Ducrohet wrote today on the Android developers blog. Google released a preview software
development kit today, with a final version of the
SDK available "in the weeks ahead," Ducrohet
wrote. Android 3.0 will include a new interface designed
for tablets, in addition to an improved touch-
screen keyboard, tabbed Internet browsing and
other features.
